Greens Restaurant & The Marina (San Francisco Post 1 of 3)
OK, so what I didn't tell you is that while the Grandparents were in town, Art and I left town! We cashed in on some frequent flyer miles and visited San Francisco for a couple days. The first night, we stayed with some dear friends -- I asked Lorna where we could get some vegetarian food, and expected her to suggest Millennium (which is where we had reservations for the following evening) but she didn't. She said the place she hears the most about (she's omni) is Greens Restaurant. This photo was taken at the Marina with Alcatraz behind us -- right before going to Greens!
Greens has been around for 26 years setting the standard for gourmet vegetarian cuisine. You can enjoy the open, art-filled, floor to ceiling windows with sweeping views of the Marina, Golden Gate Bridge, and Marin Headlands --- or get Greens to go with their convenient take-out picnic fare counter. Greens serves gourmet vegetarian & vegan cuisine using only their homegrown & organic produce -- the diverse menu changes daily.
This is my lunch:
Mediterranean Sampler --
French lentil salad with lemon, mint and ricotta salata; filo turnover with leeks, fromage blanc and thyme; roasted pepper hummous; green, yellow wax and romano beans with tarragon vinaigrette; grilled pita bread; spicy tomato jam; olives. $13.75

Art's Lunch: (for once I'm glad I ordered mine and not his!)
Asian Tofu Sandwich --
Grilled tofu in spicy peanut sauce with pickled carrots, jicama and cilantro on Acme petit baguette. Served with little gems, tat soi, grilled shiitake mushrooms and sesame ginger vinaigrette. $9.75

I loved this restaurant! It was an outstanding feast for the eyes and mouth -- the view couldn't get much better & the food was perfect.
Our own fault, being tourists, we got lost finding this restaurant. Art, like some men, refuses to use a map. We finally gave in and called and they said it was across the street from Safeway supermarket at Laguna & Buchanan. We found a Safeway on Market Street between those streets and, coincidentally, it was the wrong Safeway, the restaurant is located in the Marina area in the Ft. Mason complex. We eventually crossed up to the right side of town to find the correct Safeway between Laguna and Buchanan, and thankfully, Greens was right there with easy parking access and a superb environment.

Oh, you guys are super sneaky! That's great that you got to get away, and to such a fantastic city. Thanks for the info. on Greens Restaurant, I'd never heard of it. And that picture of you and Art is so cute. Looks like I wasn't the only one that did some traveling these last few days...can't wait to see your next 2 posts!
Oh I hope that you had fun in SF. I just love living in this city. Although I haven't yet been to Greens restaurant. My friends and I have stayed away because we're poor college students. If you ever come to SF again I highly reccomend Herbivore (a vegan restaurant) and also Ananda Fuara (vegetarian and vegan friendly). I've been to both many times and love them. Now I must go to Greens, especially because the view sounds spectacular. (Oh and you're super lucky about the easy parking). I hope that you had a nice weekend without hte kids!

if you're ever up in SF again, it would be great to meet you!
Sounds like you had a lot of fun!!! the food looks terrific too.
Hugs,G
Teresa, you are so lucky to live in SF! So many vegn restaurants & beautiful sights -- so little time(for visitors). We'll be back to SF sooner than later & I think it'd be awesome to meet you!
Ananda-Fuara would be great. I just read about it in a restaurant guide -- says it's: An oasis on Market Street, the peaceful vegetarian restaurant serves fresh and wholesome food, prepared consciously with prayer.

I think you'd really like Greens, too. One way to avoid some fuss would be their take out. The parking is super easy at The Fort Mason Center and they have a convenient take-out counter inside. It's reasonably priced -- sandwiches $5-$7, and salads $4-$7. They also have some hot foods, baked goods, & beverages to go. It'd be an awesome picnic!
XO
I should not read your blog when I'm hungry. :)
What a cute restaurant! I want to visit San Fran so badly...and here's another reason to do so!
Greens is WONDERFUL! And I was just about to say that about the take-out--a much less expensive way to get good Greens food. We love their black bean chili and their quiche and their muffins and their salads and sandwiches....mmm. And the parking is great--so close to very crowded places in SF but lots of free parking. We one time just parked our car there and took a taxi to North Beach because it's so hard to get parking there.
I love San Francisco. I'm glad you could enjoy it too!
And yes, Herbivore is also yummy. It's all vegan, too, which is just amazing. And it's great value--much less expensive and good homey food.
I always say, now that I've moved to Portland from San Francisco, that Portland is my new favorite city. But when we went back to San Francisco last month....I couldn't help but feel at home, and nostalgic for living there. There's just no place quite like it!
You look soooo very happy !!!
Oooh!! Sneaky you!! Lol! I love that you got to take a trip to SF!!! Looks so nice there. I love all these photos of you - you are SO adorable!! You and Art are so cute together - that first shot is really sweet.
Oh! What a cute new display picture too!!
Greens looks so pretty inside! I love the artwork! Your Mediterranean Sampler looks like a good pick!!
Oh, that looks like a good time and the food seems very healthy yet tasty. Great work!

How cool are those art works on the wall - looks great!
Love the pic at the Marina...so neat that you can see Alcatraz in the distance. I've heard of the Greens Restaurant before. It's really cool you got to eat there. The food looks beautiful and it's arranged so perfectly. Just seeing the roasted pepper hummus is making me hungry. Looks so good. I had a good chuckle over Art refusing to use a map :)
Enjoyed this trio of SF CA posts very much. This last photo... so cute, you! I'm so glad you and Art got to get away together. SWEET! And as for not using a map... it's not just a "man" thing... Art, i hears ya! Who needs a stinkin' map!? (Karen said, as she gets more lost every time she takes a step out of her own house, not to mention going anywhere!!!)
Hee hee. Love the posts, truly, Vicki!
