Millennium Restaurant & China Town (San Francisco Post 2 of 3)
When we were deciding where to go for a couple days, San Francisco rose to the top for more reasons than just the obvious spectacularness of the city -- we have friends to visit (I just calculated that Lorna & I have been buds for 27 years!), and we really wanted to eat at the Millennium. Here we are sitting on the grassy steps of Union Square in anticipation of a gourmet vegan meal. It is a shame that I don't have photos of our meal. If you've seen his cookbook, The Artful Vegan, then you'll have an idea of what I mean. Each meal looked like a work of art -- very complicated & elaborate dishes. Nope, no photos. *dabbing corner of eye* I did get the above mentioned cookbook, which was signed by Eric Tucker himself -- he took a little break from cooking to do so. I saw him with my own eyes -- matched him right up with his cookbook photos.
Both our meals were Vegan, Organic, Local, Beautiful, & Delicious! We can't wait to go back.Art's --
1. Grilled Bitter Greens and Sweet Onion Salad
fresh black Mission figs, house-smoked tofu, pecan-fig-balsamic vinaigrette
2. Chipotle Grilled Portobello Mushroom
cranberry bean & posole chile verde, butternut squash masa arepa, sauteed greens, sweet chipotle glaze, spiced toasted pumpkin seeds
Mine --
1. Roasted Pumpkin Salad
apples & sweet peppers, cider vinaigrette, toasted pumpkin seeds, pumpkin seed oil
2. Pomegranate Glazed Tempeh
autumn vegetable hash, Israeli couscous with saffron "cream", green coriander, shaved fennel & lemon pickle, pomegranate seeds
This month's Veg News has an article "Tips from the Top - Veg chefs dish their delicious home-cooking secrets" in which Eric Tucker (Millennium co-owner) says his pantry must-have is curry paste, and his kitchen tool essential is a knife sharpener. Fun question... Guess if I could only pick one of each, It'd be Earth Balance & a Vegetable Peeler. What's your pantry must-have? And your kitchen tool essential?

Even without photos, the foods sounds amazing! The Roasted Pumpkin Salad sounds fabulous. YUM!!!! That is a fun question...My pantry must-have is a good quality organic extra virigin olive oil and my kitchen tool essential would have to be my microplane.
Yes- my mind's photo gallery is picturing your Millenium meal right now- and it's gorgeous! I'm so jealous- and you got your book signed! Lucky, lucky.
Your question is a really difficult one- I'd say a pantry essential is vinegar- of all types (I'm a fanatic) and a kitchen tool essential is a toss-up between the butcher block cutting board and the really sharp knife. Oh wait- what about the cast iron pan? Or the mandolin? Or the zester? Aughh- overload!
Wow, and yum! Looks like fun! And I love your new profile pic :)
Pantry must-have = extra-virgin olive oil
Kitchen tool essential = Chopping block
I guess. Tough question!
This is a great post Vicki. I really like the photo of you two.
Pantry Must Have: garlic
Kitchen Tool: VitaMix/Food Processor
Sounds like a great trip and wonderful food! Some day I will make it to Cali to try all these restaurants.
Pantry must have veggie broth. Great to add flavor in a pinch and then I'd say tie between food processor and at least one good chopping knife. For the longest time I just used a steak knife to chop veggies. Now, I'd never go back!
What amazing dishes! I'm blown away!
My pantry must have: beans, either canned or dried, it doesn't matter!
My kitchen tool: food processor/blender.
I don't know how people manage to make such a work of art out of food. Even though I make yummy food, it rarely is a treat to the eye.
Pantry essential- definitely garlic
Kitchen tool essential- a garlic press of course (haha). Oh yes and a food processor/blender.

Yayy I'm loving the pictures of you! Looks like the trip was a lot of fun.. man I want to go on vacation.
I read the VegNews article and was surprised to see how many chose a knife and/or chopping board. I would have to say that those are my two essential items. Speaking of that VegNews issue, I just made the Lemon Poppy Seed Cookies and they are so yummy. What a delightful treat with afternoon tea!
Great pics. I've never been to San Fran but would love to go someday. Any place that has veg friendly restaurants is a good place to vacation. We went to Kingston (Ontario) for a weekend getaway and had some of the most delicious (vegetarian) meals. Shocking how many wonderful restaurants are in such a small city. If you're ever visiting check out Chez Piggy's. Despite the name they have a vegetarian menu!
What fun pictures! Just this morning I had a play date with a mom who lived in San Fran for 17 years, and misses her community there. It's hard to imagine you and Art have 2 kids, you look like mere kids yourself!
Pantry must have: tahini
Kitchen tool essential: garlic press
Must go to the kitchen now and see if I can manage to copy cat your I-MUST-HAVE-NOW!! Roasted Pumpkin Seed dish.
Yayyyyyy! A trip for Art and Vicki!!! Hoping YOU two lovebirds are having a "Ooh, La, LA" time!!! xoxooxoo pantry must have=garlic and kitchen tool essential=coffee pot!!!! LOL
