Herbivore Restaurant & Lombard Street (San Francisco Post 3 of 3)

If you're in San Francisco, you gotta go to Herbivore. It's stylish, fresh, reasonably priced, and completely vegan. Herbivore features a cross-cultural menu from the Middle East, Thailand, China, Italy, and India. Next time, I think I'll try the Seitan Shawarma or Lemongrass Rice Noodles with grilled vegetables. There are so many choices, and you can check out the menu at the above link. There are two locations to choose from, and we went to the one in the Mission District because it's conveniently on the way to the airport.

We were famished, so we began with this from the Starters selection.

Crisp Tacos:
Two crisp tacos with soy protein, beans, tofu cheese, guacamole, lettuce, and salsa

Good thing I took a photo because these tacos disappeared like magic. They were so flavorful, and it made me think that vegan cheese might not be so bad afterall.

Washing it down was
a San Pellegrino Limonata.

Art's Lunch:
Marinated Tofu Sandwich on Focaccia Bread:
with avocado, onions, lettuce, tomatoes, & pickles. Served with seasoned potatoes and green salad with dijon mustard dressing.

Mine:
Baked Falafel Wrap:
seasoned onions, fresh tomatoes, hummus, hot sauce, pickles, & tahini dressing in a wrap with a green salad with potatoes and eggplant.

I usually don't like wraps or burritos because they get too soggy & fall apart. Glad I took a chance with this one. They have a super-hoopified style. Only one hand necessary to hold it, no drips, no falling apart, & not just stuffed with lettuce, either. It was solid.

This is the kind of place you could easily eat at everyday. In fact, in this month's Veg News, there is an article, "The 20 Best Restaurants for Everyday Dining -- Dine out and dine well without breaking the bank," in which Herbivore is featured. It says, "Though this restaurant bills itself as 'the earthly grill,' it's more like veg heaven..." I totally agree with that statement.

Are you looking for a Veg friendly get-away? Try San Franciso. You might wonder if San Francisco can be affordable? Yes. Here are some hotels to get you started:

Metropolis Hotel -- Rooms start @ $99 There is a suite for children, and packages for dogs.

The Phoenix Hotel -- Rooms start @ $139 The "rock 'n' roll" hotel near the Civic Center. Art has stayed here... along with a bunch of other people! :o)

Hotel California -- Rooms start @ $139 Millennium is located in this hotel, near Union Square.

Cornell Hotel -- Rooms start @ $85 with shared bath, or $110 with private bath. Rate includes breakfast!

This last photo was taken on the famous Lombard Street -- and off in the distance, you see Coit Tower.

I've eaten at the Herbivore in the Western Addition twice and must say that the establishment is a mixed bag. The first time I went there I ordered the lasagna and thought is was pretty good. I also had a blueberry pie that was so sweet, I was afraid that I became diabetic after one bite. My friend ordered the thai peanut sauce noodles and tried some and it was okay. The second time I went there, I ordered the burrito and thought it was sub-mediocre. It tasted no better than a microwaveable burrito. I've eaten waaaaaaaaay better burritos that cost less. Also, my friend ordered the burger and the patty was dry like beef jerky. I guess you win a little and lose a lot there. Maybe I just went at the wrong time and just got unlucky and/or ordered the wrong stuff.

What incredible restaurant meals you are having! I'm just a *little* jealous, but happy for you to be enjoying it all!! If you start posting desserts, I'm in trouble though. :)

Thanks for sharing your vacation with us. Great pics and great food!
I would have to try the seitan shawarma if I got to go to Herbivore. I used to love the flavors in shawarma but hardly ever ordered it (even before I was a veggie person) 'cause there was lamb in it. I bet a seitan version would be great. :)

Thanks so much for these S.F. posts- they've been a nostalgic tear-jerker for me. I grew up in the Bay Area, and when we'd go to San Francisco, my brother and I would always beg my mom to drive down Lombard street (before they closed it to cars, that is. But it's open again, right?)
I'm glad you guys had such a good time. Can't wait to go myself.

hi jasont: we didn't eat at the western addition, it was mission. bummer your meals weren't good. maybe it was that particular location? where do you like to get veggie food in SF? thanks for your visit & comment.

hi dreena: now that you mention it, we didn't get desserts at any of the 3 meals... we looked at the menu & they looked great, but we were just too stuffed.

hi meesh: i've never eaten shawarma before for the reason you stated, so i thought it'd be fun to try vegan shawarma. i like seitan.

hi bazu: yes, lombard street is open to cars now. i'm glad these posts sorta took you down memory lane (even if it was crooked!) did you have a chance to eat at some veg'n eateries while there?

thanks for dropping by everyone & taking the time to say hello -- it makes the writing worth the while!

OH yay I'm glad that you made it to Hervbivore. It's definitely one of my favorite SF restaurants. Plus the bill fits the college students wallet. They also have good breakfast. I tried scramble tofu for the first time, at Herbivore.

I've haven't yet been to the one in the Mission though. My school is much closer to the other one, but I assume they're practically identical.

I'm glad you enjoyed your vacation. SF is such a great and exciting city!

Oh I'm so jealous! I would love to go to that restaurant. The west coast has such cool things and places. I should move. I'd love to see San Fran. My friend went last year and had an amazing time. Sounds like you did too!

You have more than inspired me! I haven't been to San Fran since I was a child and would like to go. After reading your last few posts, I decided that I'm going to save up some more money and take a major road trip. I'm going to go to So Cal to visit my family & friends but I think I'll then head North to San Fran, Eureka (which is close to where we used to own a home), and up to Portland. Who knows where I'll go from there. I'm so excited just thinking about it!

I am finally back on line. Thanks for the visit and comment.

What wonderful meals. I certainly miss out on some great restaurants by living in Africa but we do have other great things to compensate.

Looks like a wonderful trip. I've yet to make it to San Fran proper, maybe someday. Will be a bit harder now that I'm leaving CA, but then again I won't have to use all my vacation time to visit family anymore.
