Baby Shower
On Sunday, I hosted a baby shower for a dear friend that I've known since 4th grade. We went to elementary, jr. & high school together, and she's the one who introduced me to Art back in 1990 when they were in law school. And now, she's a first time mom at 40. It was myself and 4 other long-time friends who planned and threw the shower for Lora.
Deanna made this tea. It was so refreshing and perfect. It had fresh peaches, mint, tea ice-cubes, and was sweetened with stevia. She is an amazing cook and her tea was a big hit.
I made Dreena's 'Quinoa Spring Salad' from Vive le Vegan! I had all the ingredients chopped and measured in the fridge ready to toss together that morning - the pine nuts were in the fridge ready to be toasted. I tossed the salad, and forgot the pine nuts. Nuts! I was bummed that I forgot, nobody knew except me, and the salad was a big hit. Lots of questions from first time quinoa eaters, etc. Isa says to never apologize for your food, and I didn't.
Deanna also made this beautiful pasta salad. She had cork screw pasta tossed with olives, sugar snap peas, artichokes, tomato, cauliflower, broccoli, red bell pepper, dressing, and I think feta cheese. She may have had even more veggies than that -- I remember thinking there is every veggie known to man in this salad. Delish.
Tammy made the watermelon fruit bowl. It's hard to see in this photo, but there is all kinds of fresh fruit -- watermelon, pineapple, apples, oranges, cantaloupe, etc.
You also see my finger sandwiches with black bread, cream cheese, baby archly, & cucumber.
And Ann's colorful, fresh veggie basket.
After everybody left (about 25), we took some more photos of just us. We had to rub the Buddha belly for good luck...and also to document the magnitude of her otherwise washboard stomach. :o)
We all wanted good luck, so we stuffed ourselves with balloons for the group pregnancy photo. My shirt was long and stretchy, so I look just as pregnant as Lora.
She received a bunch of terrific gifts -- many along the Winnie-The-Pooh theme, and is expecting a boy mid-September.

Vicki, I love how colorful all of the food is for Lora's shower. Your quinoa salad still looks delish (minus the pine nuts) and it's good to know you were the only one who knew they were missing. I have to keep that in mind, as I'm *always* explaining to Ray.
I've never had fresh peach and mint together but it sounds wonderful, especially as a tea (maybe that would make me feel better?!). As for Deanna's monster veggie pasta salad, I must say too that it looks like every veggie on the planet was stuffed in here. So colorful, minus the cheese, but it does give a nice contrast to it. Your tea cakes look great too, it's a good finger food for the party, yet still not a total snack.
And lastly, I must say, your "baby" sure does like to sit high up. It looks and sounds like a good time and mid-September sure is creeping up fast! This is a great, refreshing (in many ways) post.
Hehe, love that last photo. Sounds like a lovely spread for the party, I love that serving set for the quinoa salad, so pretty! I just read that little blurb in VwaV about never apologizing for your food, good advice to follow. We’re our own worst critics! I remember my mom used to make one of those little watermelon baskets with fruit salad every Easter, I though it was really cool.
aww, it looks like you had a blast with your girlfriends! What a delicious spread of food (and healthy)!
The balloon pic is a hoot - now if only it "felt" that light being that prego!!
Late congrats to you and Art on your 14th anniversary, by the way. :)
-D.
Look at all that fresh looking, colorful food!
Lora probably doesn't feel as big anymore after seeing the last photo!
I would have never thought to put peaches in tea like that. What a great looking bunch of veg food and it looks like the party went well.
I wish you and Art another wonderful 15 years and beyond.
Oh, I forgot I wanted to ask this
What is baby archly on your sandwiches?
I imagine it is a green of some sort.
I love the red tiled counter and the green chairs, l-o-v-e it !
Everything looks great, wow !
I too noticed that your balloon baby is being carried really high up ! The heartburn you must have, girl ! LOL
Holy doodle! What a spread! Everything looks soooooo good. If I knew that I would have so much good stuff made for me, I'd have a baby! HA! Well, maybe that's getting a bit carried away.
Seriously, it looks like you really had a wonderful shower for your friend.
And, like everyone else, I really like the last photo.
hi leslie & gaia: now that you mention it... more accurately stated would have been "look ALMOST as pregnant as Lora" it's just something you can't fake! who am i trying to kid? (good pun, eh?)
hi shannon: Great idea your mom has... Easter -- a time for a fruit basket instead of the nasty egg basket. I'm going to remember & do that. Good call.
hi dreena: i agree! and also if only it were so easy as to just pull the string... and *poof* not pregnant anymore. i'm so glad you're back and tickled you came by to say hi. :o)
hi kai: i hope so. for me the last month of pregnancy was difficult! i'm also happy you're back & dropped by! :o)
hi dori: thanks! good eye on the "baby archly" what tha?! i fell asleep on spell check. baby arugula tastes much better than archly! good guess on green. and btw, we had a blast at the fair -- couldn't help but think of you and your family there! :o)
hi carrie: you slipped in there on me! thanks for dropping by, and trust me, there are other ways to get some good food! *wink* you crack me up! :o)
Hi Vicky!
Thanks for popping onto my blog and leaving that sweet comment! I had to stop by and I was frozen in envy when I saw the picture of the iced tea. Lol! Wow.
Your quinoa salad looks really good too! I have the book and now have to try that recipe! The bowl and spoons with that dish are totally cute!!!
You all look like you are having a great time in those last photos! I can see those framed on a shelf someday and this baby looking at them and laughing at mom and her crazy friends!
Sounds like you all had a great time!
What a nice baby shower for your friend. Congrats to her!!!
That tea sounds so refreshing. The watermelon bowl is adorable. I love when people make those and fill them with a variety of fruit, not just cubed watermelon. The Quinoa Spring Salad looks great!!
What a lovely shower... the food looks amazing and you all looks so close and happy too.... what a celebration! The birth of a new baby... I can't imagine being 40 and having my first child... what a trip! (not that it's a bad thing, I think it's awesome!)

SHOWER POWER! Good friends, good food, good fun, good times.
Love the look of the round tummy on you, Vicki. You know the feeling of the baby-in-the-belly even without the balloons. It must have been fun for you to try "that look" on again... hee hee.
Food looks AWESOME! Wow! Dreena's Quinoa Spring Salad is so colourful and lovely. I'll bet everyone loved it - what wasn't to love? Great bowl, too. Really interesting! I especially love the fruit basket in the watermelon there. It may be hard to see, but my eyes were drawn there. That pasta salad looks insane!
It does not surprise me in the least that you are still in touch with a friend of yours from back in fourth grade. What a lucky lady to know you for many years. And how fantastic that she was the "matchmaker" - she did a great job, didn't she!?!? Lora looks lovely. Wishing her happy motherhood. If her children are even half as wonderful as yours, she will be blessed tenfold.
(sent twice for dorky spelling errors!)
Have a great rest of your week, Vicki!
Vicki, I can't believe it. I check out your blog all the time and this was the first time I was finally able to comment. It's been so dissapointing. For some reason I would click on the comment link and NOTHING. NOTHING I tell ya. Finally, I was complaining to hubby and he told me to hold down the CTRL key and click at the same time and voila! It worked. The other blogs that have pop-up comments don't do this to me. Agh! At least I know the trick now.
Anyway, I think you are a terrific person and you have a very nice and thoughtful blog.
I absolutely love the bowl and serving spoons for the quinoa. It's very unique.
