Jess's Daily Grind & Midweek Munchies

Harmonias Midweek Munchies Meme
A Veg*n Meme

What wonderful foods did you bring home from the grocery store?

Midweek Munchies: What Vicki is contributing for the week:

A while back, Jess of Get Sconed! mentioned The Daily Grind and said "...if you're ever in the Portland area you should stop by..." Well, we were in the area, so we did! It was a great stop for us -- convenient off the freeway, amazing food, fun experience, delightful neighborhood to explore, and a beautiful park close by. Thanks so much for the suggestion, Jess! You're lucky to have such a friendly natural foods store near you.

There it is! The Daily Grind.

Look at all the wonderful vegan baked goods there are to choose from!

Beautifully organized bulk bins of all kinds! Mostly organic.

This is my purchase: Sesame Tahini, Yaya Popcorn, Tempeh Burger, & Vegan Marionberry Scone (Wish I had bought every scone they had -- would have eaten them all!)

Couple Questions: Does Tahini need to be refrigerated after opened?
What are your favorite ways to use Tahini?

Vicki this delights me to read! <3 that store! They have excellent bulk tofu as well.

The blueberry scones are my favorite - it's ridiculous how large they are! I'm so glad your family was able to stop by Portland.

I keep my opened tahini in the fridge.

First, wonderful list with pics!!!

2nd, I'm jealous of the places you have of (the availability) of vegan items/baked goods.

And last...
Tahini.

I love it!

When I first started buying Tahini I had the same question. I left the Tahini on my shelf in the cupboard for 2 to 3 weeks and it wasn't terrible BUT I read online that you SHOULD refrigerate it! Since then that is what I have been doing...I believe I also read that you should use it once opened within a month...but I am sure I have stretched that a bit.

I am just a tad envious of all the vegan baked goodies available there!! Lucky you to have shopped there - well, lucky Jess all of the time! :)

I keep my tahini in the fridge after opening, and it keeps very well. I keep all nut butters and nuts/seeds in the fridge too - their oils can go off when not refrigerated. Sometimes I taste a product with walnuts in it (or I buy them in a store), and the walnuts taste "off" and just not pleasant. I refrigerate them as soon as I buy them.

As for tahini - I LOVE making tahini sauces, and also just slathering some on a sandwich with grated carrots and other veg, and other seasonings you like such as mustard and/or Nayonnaise/Vegenaise - very yummy!

I think I will have to go to Portland just for that vegan bakery section.

I always refrigerate anything once it has been opened. Oh, except for agave nectar and siracha hot sauce.

hi jess: wow, dg even has bulk tofu? i saw bulk: grains, spices, dried fruit/nuts, pasta, and i'm sure there's much more. my co-op doesn't even come close on bulk items, it's more packaged -- but they do have an awesome wine selection!
i'm not even kidding when i say that was the very best scone i've ever tasted - vegan or otherwise. no lie. and boggling how many vegan baked items there were to choose from.

hi harmonia: sort of available to me...it's about a 7 hour drive! a bit much for a marionberry scone. LOL! :o) we were just passing through on the way home from the oregon coast.

hi dreena: it really was great to have all those choices in vegan baked goods, but very difficult to decide! thanks for the tip on keeping nuts & all nutty things in the fridge. & a tahini sandwich with carrots sound wonderful.

hi leslie: you would totally dig that bakery being the queen of treats and all! LOL! :o) siracha hot sauce is a new one for me??

hi kleoPatra: delightful & overwhelming for me, but i think one couldn't go wrong with whatever item was chosen.

Siracha (sp?) is a hot sauce I find in the Asian market, but I also always see it in restaurants that are veg friendly as well as Thai. I think they have the ingredients listed in about 5 languages!

Keep more of these food-photo posts coming! I am seriously considering flying there just for treats!

Vicki - I use tahini in hummus (of course!) and also as a sauce for steamed asparagus with orange juice. I can't seem to find the recipe right now though.

Hello. My wife and I bought our house about 6 months ago. It was a foreclosure and we were able to get a great deal on it. We also took advantage of the 8K tax credit so that definitely helped. We did an extensive remodeling job and now I want to refinance to cut the term to a 20 or 15 year loan. Does anyone know any good sites for mortgage information? Thanks!

Mike
